Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has today announced an increase in power tariffs by 40.29 percent for all power users except for those using 0 - 50 units per month.
Speaking at Movenpick Hotel, Dar es Salaam today, the Director General for EWURA, Haruna Masebu has said that the new tariffs will start effective 15th of this month and that TANESCO employees will also be paying the same rates as other Tanzanians.
However, one Baraka Mhanje has criticized the move when interviewed today saying that it will make the lives of most Tanzanians even tougher than they already are because by increasing the tariffs it means prices for everything that depend on electricity will also increase.
"Almost everything in our lives depend on electricity, so by increasing the power tariffs it means that almost prices for everything will rise, thus making the lives of Tanzanians even tougher than they already are." He said.
The increase has come following TANESCO's request of 9th November 2011 to EWURA for 155 percent increase in power rates.
